Default How do you value yourself at SRL?

I am a bit lost recently.

I have joined SRL for a bit over 3 months. It's been really nice - I get to see a lot of great people contributing to the community and there's a lot of amazing work that really opened my eyes to the world of open source community.

Throughout the months I earned myself the rank of a member. To me it's a good achievement. but anyway, when I looked at some of work by the greater scripters around, I feel diminished. I just feel that I don't have the energy to maintain multiple releases at the same time, and can keep up with constantly giving back to the community in terms of scripts or whatever.

It's not really an excuse for me to say I have limited time to commit because of college or whatever, but my thought is, what I am able to achieve myself is little compared to many others.

Do you ask yourselves this question? I did, and I was not very sure whether I made a difference at SRL. Constructive criticism and encouragement would be really helpful.

I don't always have time to contribute, but I try to do it when I have free time. Just do what you can, you're doing great

Your doing awesome, you help people and I know you've helped me alot and that has allowed me to have a few releases and that is what I beleive as a contribution that is better than just continuously releasing scripts.

I feel like I'm responsible for everything that goes on here. You can probably tell I have my nose it a lot of projects. I don't go to school, I just play hockey. So basically I have an average of 6-8 hours a day of free time (not that I spend it all on SRL ).

The point is, you shouldn't compare yourself to other people because you don't know their situation. Now you know mine, and why I have no much time, but most people actually have lives like school or a job. Just contribute when you want to, there's no pressure to do more than you want. After all, this is a free open sourced community.

I actually enjoyed the fact that SRL is an open sourced community. People are generally willing to share and help, and I really get the feeling there's give and take in the things I do here.

Coh3n, I guess what you said is very right. I guess I shouldn't really stress on comparing myself with others. I think I have overlooked the fact that I have a real life that I should take care with more importance than spending most of my time scripting and getting involved at the SRL forums.

And thanks to everyone for reassuring me that I have made a difference here as well

I even contribute less than you, but that doesn't matter. Personally I don't enjoy working on runescape bots or upgrading the srl include. So I don't. I try to contribute to be helpful and creating tutorials, although I don't really have one on this community. It's not just about contributing, but being part of the community.

I guess we all have our places to belong to, right?

Many Members stick around with probably 1 public release, nothing to worry about. Also, absolutely nothing wrong with that...

Want some long term gratification make a tutorial on a new subject. Improve an old tutorial with more detail. Those things last quite a while and people really appreciate it. Feel like leaving your mark on Simba? We always need help writing the Docs. You don't have to add a lot to the docs. Ask wizzup? at some points I only added like 6 lines of code as an example then uploaded it because that's all the free time I had. Want to script a bit and help the community? Learn to script/fix MSI issues. They could always use more hands and trust me what little help anyone can provide they will gladly accept. As far a maintaining script goes Do what you can when you can. Easiest way is most likely to fix one script at a time before moving to issues on the next one.

I have a Long hour job and a family so I do what I can to help out around the community. When I have some spare time I make Forms for peoples scripts. I like making forms from scratch without an editor and it helps me get my little bit of coding in. I also try to set a morally correct example for others to see.

"Sometimes User's don't need the Answer spelled out with Code. Sometimes all they need is guidance and explanation of the logic to get where they are going."

I think, as some others have said, it isn't necessarily about the scripts that you release or keep updated, but the overall influence you are on the forums. Most of the posts I've seen from you are helpful, and well formed. Those kind of posts make a bigger overall impact than a script will by far.

For the small amount of time you've been here you have done great things. Don't get stressed about keeping your scripts up to date, though I do understand that desire as well and it does create a type of internal pressure. Focus more on keeping yourself interested, as if you stress out about this stuff, it will become less fun for you, which will mean you are more likely to drop it completely, which no one wants.

Keep up the good work, stay positive, and if you ever need to let off some steam, join the IRC, good times happen there. Most importantly, keep real life first.

When I asked that question to myself a year ago or two ago (when I too had the rank of SRL Member) I found out that the community didn't really benefit from me much at all.

What I did was to step away from who I was at that time, and started to care about the people around me and what they though about me. I wanted to feel appreciated, and the only way to do that, is to make sure one matters. I tried to help people, talk to people and script with people, and look at me now; I'm one of the staff members.

I still haven't released my first script.
