    Default Mining speed is random?

I would like to think that mining speed is correlated with your level. But often than not I feel that it is just random as I see people with lower lvl mining faster than I do. Any thoughts?

Edit: I am assuming people are lower lvl than me cuz I am nearly 99

its random within a certain range. So if you two are the same level then ocassionally he might be you or you might beat him.

But if he is lowerlevel, its often you will beat him but he can beat you too.

Do you think that after a certain point the random variability is so great that difference in level becomes meaningless? Cuz that is how I feel

no. But my estimate are someone has +/- 15 lvl mining might have a chance to beat you.

    depends on what your mining.

Also if both players were to get the ore on the same game tick then the player with better PID will get the ore. This is very important factor when mining like iron or clay.

^This, with iron. I used to use two accs and try to get a high PID by relogging until one was above the other, and repeating until it was really high. With rune and addy though, it is mostly randomized. When you mine, it takes a different amount of time to get the ore for every single rock, so even if you were competing with yourself, you'd lose some of the time. This time is, on average, lower for higher levels, but still a lvl 85 can one-hit a runite ore occasionally.

You just expect to mine faster than other people so you notice it more when you mine slower than someone. It's called confirmation bias.

also, there are of course some things that help.

I remember at gems in shilo village when I was a noob that used to mine those legit for money, I'd outmine 99 miners at 80 mining, wearing a charged glory amulet (it used to help, idk if it still does)

I remember when PID was based on your IP.
It was hell when I did castle wars and people would keep cading quicker than I would.

    I think it's like pickaxes

each pickaxe has % faster, so lets say you have a dragon pickaxe which is 15% faster jagex said (if I remember correctly)

lets say a rock spawns, that you want to mine
lets say that rock is set to take 100 seconds to mine
dragon pickaxe is 15% faster so you're down to 85 seconds

and now lets say.. each level adds 1% (for math sake)

lets say you're level 80.. so you would mine it in 5 seconds

but it could also be randomized when you click it, so person b starts with 50 seconds and you start with 100 seconds

jagex can have any ridiculous system like this, so it's specific enough but yet still seems random to the person who is actually doing the mining
The only true authority stems from knowledge, not from position.

Since grats mentioned seconds, I might as well add more info.
    http://runescape.wikia.com/wiki/Game_tick
Each animation on RuneScape is dependant on a "Game Tick".
One Game Tick = about .6 seconds, but A Jmod has confirmed that other activities can be as quick as 50 mili-seconds for a tick.

Below is taken from the RS Wiki:

    Mining
With a rune pickaxe or inferno adze, there is a chance to mine an ore every 3 ticks.

This does not apply to rune essence, which comes more frequently than this, or to using a dragon pickaxe, which can mine ores at varying times.
