Unhappy Gunman kills 12 people at a Colorado Theater during Dark Knight Rises Release

I just woke up to read this on google news and all over the news on TV. This is just utterly sad and leaves me with no words to say. I was going to head over to the movies today with my friends to see the Dark Knight Rises, but Im reconsidering and want to show some emotions for those 12 who lost their lives because of a 24 year old man who dressed up as the character "Bane" from the movie.

The 24 year old man named James Holmes came into the theater with a gas mask, 4 guns, bullet proof vest, and tear gas. He opened fire during a scene where Bane was doing something similar in the movie. 12 people were killed and 53 were injured. My prayers and thoughts go for those who lost their loved ones and those who were injured.

A gas mask-wearing gunman opened fire on moviegoers at a midnight showing of the latest Batman movie Friday, killing at least 12 and injuring dozens more in one of the deadliest mass shootings in recent U.S. history.

The violent and chaotic scene erupted about 12:30 a.m. local time as the suspected gunman, identified as 24-year-old James Holmes, stood at the front of one of the Century 16 theaters at the Aurora Mall where "The Dark Knight Rises" was playing. Witnesses reported that the gunman entered the theater through an emergency exit door and threw a gas canister before opening fire.

"Then it was a blur," Spenser Sherman told "CBS This Morning" said. "Then I heard a couple gunshots."

"I thought it was part of the movie, like a fun little prank - that it would be over in a few seconds. It obviously wasn't."

She said she only saw a silhouette of the suspect, and that the gunman said nothing.

"Everybody had dropped to the floor after the first couple gunshots, and then he fired some more. And then after that, there was a pause in the gunshots. Some people say he was reloading, I don't know. But at that point, my boyfriend was like 'This is the time, we need to go, we need to get out of the theater right now.' So we ran."

Jennifer Seeger told CBS station KCNC the suspect first fired up towards the ceiling, as if to scare people, and then started spraying the audience. He pointed the gun directly at her; she ducked. "He had a gas mask on so I couldn't see his face," she said. "All I smelled was gunpowder in the air, and gas was getting to me."

Police, ambulances and emergency crews swarmed on the scene after frantic calls started flooding the 911 switchboard, officials said.

Officers found Holmes near a car behind the theater. He surrendered without resistance, police said.

Police recovered four guns at the theater - one shotgun, two pistols and what is believed to be an assault rifle, a law enforcement source told CBS News correspondent Bob Orr. Authorities also recovered a gas mask.

A law enforcement source said the suspect also had a bullet proof vest, ballistic helmet and military SWAT clothing. Authorities were testing unidentified explosives in his vehicle, though their exact nature is unclear.

The nature of the attack suggests it was well planned. The suspect's vehicle was parked at the rear of the complex, near the emergency exit where he was reported to have entered from.

Aurora Police chief Dan Oates said there's no evidence of any other attackers. There was also no immediate word of any motive. Federal law enforcement officials are being briefed on the attack, but at this point, there is no indication it is terrorism-related, CBS News senior correspondent John Miller reports.

Police were at Holmes' Denver-area apartment and confirmed that it was apparently booby-trapped and had evacuated other residents of the building. A law enforcement source told Orr that police saw what looked like "buckets of extra ammunition" and some kind of chemical inside his home.

Oates said it could take hours or days to safely enter the apartment.

I heard about this, and it's utterly sad My heart goes out to the families of the killed and injured.

My question is, how did he get in with the guns and gas? Were they hidden in his outfit?

emergency exit. crazy guy. hope he enjoys his nice little jail cell. i doubt they were consealed though as he made no attempts to flee, "Officers found Holmes near a car behind the theater. He surrendered without resistance, police said." most likely didnt give a f*** weather people seen him or not. he did go there to shoot up the place, so if somebody woulda ran up and said "what do you think your doing" he woulda just shot them too? plus the fact he threw a canister of tear gas into the theaters emergency exit he woulda been wearing the mask as he walked in causing enough suspision

    Argument 1: It's population control =.=

Argument 2: He is a disgusting human, I'm glad I didn't go to that showing, it must be heart breaking to know that so many people died... it makes me wonder what would have happened if I went with my girlfriend etc...

My friend and I were gonna go watch the midnight premiere of Batman at this movie theatre (my friend lives in Aurora, I live in Lakewood). We ended up getting high and just hanging at his place.

I guess you could say I dodged a bullet (literally).

I live in Colorado too (Littleton). Just hearing about this this afternoon, absolutely insane. They said on the news a few minutes ago about ~71 (I think) people in total were shot, and 12 died.

Glad you ended up not going to the movie man... This is just...

I thought they said he had them concealed? how do you conceal a shotgun, assault rifle and 2 pistols in your clothing.

A law enforcement source said the suspect also had a bullet proof vest, ballistic helmet and military SWAT clothing. Authorities were testing unidentified explosives in his vehicle, though their exact nature is unclear.
And the clothing didn't look suspicious? I know he came in from the emergency exit, but what wasn't triggering alarms beforehand?

Past the vague bits, I feel bad for everyone that had to witness such a devastating event.

    Updated story here: http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news...26/detail.html

So what they have learned is that he bought a ticket and sat in the movie for about 15 minutes, then went out the back door and "...propped open the back door to the theater when it was dark. The gunman then went back to his car and parked it in the back of the theater, dressed himself in full armor, grabbed the guns and went in through the open back door. "

    Insane stuff.

This may sound harsh, but for some reason I seem to care less and less about what happens in the united states. Of course this is bad, and should be avoided. But with the wars the US starts, the gun with every pack of cornflakes policy and the extreme right government.(yes Obama is not there for the people but for the companies) This seem to happen so often in the US...

there was a lady who got robbed at the seven 11 and was shot in the face with a pellet gun, went through her skull but didn't get to her brain. idk what is wrong with people, seven 11's carry a maximum amount of money during the day, it's like <$50 my bro worked there for a few months

What else do you expect in a country that allows people to wield guns wherever they are? No offence, but things like this are bound to happen.

I imagine this will reduce the amount of people that go to the movies now. The flip side may be that move theaters actually lower their ticket prices. Kind of sux that this happened to these people. I kind of wonder what significance there is to the dark night movie being his choice...

This guy definitely has some problems. It would be interesting to hear the reasons why and what not. Why would a PHD student do something like that? He is smart enough so why do something like this when he could be successful in life. im not saying what he did is justified it would just be nice to know why he did it.
