    Default [HardWare] Help me plx!

    Hey.

    I`m pretty much dumbfounded when it comes to computers so please answer some of my questions. Quite a few.

    New ! Questions. xD

    1. What`s a motherboard?
    2. Does the brand of the computer really matter? I hear people saying things like "Dell sucks" and I'm wondering why people would say something like that. Isn`t it supposed to be based on certain aspects not the brand?
    3. I use Diskeeper Pro, but what does defragment actually do? o.0
    4. Is it possible for people to implant files on your computer? Through a key logger?
    5. Are any parts of a laptop and desktop interchangeable?
    6. Should I get Windows Vista? I hear rumors that it's slow?

    These are all answered!
    1. What determines how fast a computer runs?
    2. Is this ram?
    3. How do I add more ram?
    4. Can I take out the ram from older computers and just add it to another computers ram slot? Is ram even reusable?
    5. What makes computers change old and not work? Is it true that as long as you upgrade certain parts it'll seem new again?
    6. What is a processor, hardward or software?
    7. What the heck is a graphics card? Is it hardware or software?
    8. Difference between CPU and RAM?

    Please explain things to me like factual down symdrome slow kind of English. :P

    k_thx if you post, just like post the number and answer so I get it faster.. :P

    [*]What determines how fast a computer runs? processor and ram(for multi tasking) and for games video card plays a major role.[*]Is this ram? yeah it is[*]How do I add more ram? buy it usually[*]Can I take out the ram from older computers and just add it to another computers ram slot? Is ram even reusable? depends on wht type of ram it is there are alot of differnt types of ram slots[*]What makes computers change old and not work? Is it true that as long as you upgrade certain parts it'll seem new again? yeah for the most part.[*]What is a processor, hardward or software? a processor is what, well, processes the information being used in your computer.[*]What the heck is a graphics card? Is it hardware or software? graphics card is hardware that increase the color quality and how well a game looks. [*]Difference between CPU and RAM? ummm well cpu is the big box thing and ram is random access memory that is used mostly for keeping multiple programs running. unless ur gonna be running something like a vm(virtual machine) ur probably not gonna need ne more than a standard 512mb or 1gb

    hope this helps a lil

    Thanks a bunch rader720 it helped a lot.

    haha, I know, I know. I turned in a member application and got in. I'm a really busy so I rarely check up on the forums.. so yeah getting the scripts wasn't my priority here or anything.

    I have more questions now.

    When technicians tell you that your computer is old and is to low value any more to even fix are they telling the truth? For instance once my mom brought my Dell computer is had : 512 ram, Nvidia something graphix, ect to them because it crashed somehow... Yeah so they told my mom that and so they said they could get rid of the computer for us like recycle it.. Was this like a scam or something? I looked up some prices on eBay and I have a feeling they just said that to take parts..

    Old ram becomes very expensive when its not made any more. I am talking like old ram though. From what you said, it sounds kinda like a scam. I once went to get help at a local computer place and I found the people there to be so incompetent that I almost barfed. The guy tried to scam me when I wanted to buy a motherboard through him. He ordered a shittier one and told me it was the one I asked for... I was like, Fuck that, and walked away. I stick to big brand names just for safety reasons and reliability, although I always fix my own computers.

    A computer's speed is determined by its processor's speed and hard drive transfer rate+RPM speed. If you are running many programs, RAM is a necessity. The more RAM you have, the more processess you can run faster.

    Sorry, image shack is blocked on school computers. But this is RAM:
    http://img.search.com/thumb/d/d3/RAM...00px-RAM_n.jpg

    Go to either http://www.4allmemory.com/index.cfm?pid=309&kwd=ram or
    http://www.newegg.com/Store/Category...17&name=Memory
    I do not work for either company; they're just helpful.
    You can purchase RAM from them, and find manuals on how to install it. It's not hard. Have confidence.

    DO NOT transfer RAM from one computer to another unless they have identical clock speeds ie:PC2700-333Mhz If they are not the same speed, you will make your computer go boom, spark, and then it likely will not work.

    You can almost always upgrade a computer. There are limits however. As new, faster computers come out, older ones seem slower because you will get used to the speed of the newer ones.

    Processor=hardware, the component in a computer that makes sense of the trillions of 1s and 0s per second.

    Graphics Card=hardware, this lets your computer show you what it's thinking.

    CPU=Central Processing Unit/Processor
    RAM=Random Access Memory/what lets you run programs... ? It's necessary.
    Hope I helped. PM me for more or post here.

    uber, take note that some motherboards can run pc2700 and 3200 together. for dual channel, you want exact same modules. But lets not touch that topic right now :P

    How about you tell us the specs of your computer and we point you in the right direction.

    Thanks uber 1337, and mikev.

    What do you guys think is the best processor though?

    I was looking at consumer ratings and I found Intel Core 2 Duo is supposed to be the best atm? o.0

    yes mikev, but as you said, lets not to overload him.
    Dual cores are speedy. Mine is only a single 3ghz w/HT, but I hear there are quad cores out.

    BTW, Jussex, what do you want your computer to be able to do?
    run hl2, quake, Unreal, and 10 other games at once, or type up notepad documents?
    Considering aspects like these will help you choose what parts you will need.

    1. Lots of things, Processor and RAM, HardDrive RPM, etc..
    2. Yes
    3. You check out what type of RAM you have (DDR2 RAM, DDR RAM, ETC..) and go to a store, buy it. How to put it in: Open the little notches you'll see on the left and right of the RAM Holder. Pull them out. Put in the RAM, and there's little notches on the side of the RAM that those levers get put in.
    4. If the RAM is the same, and works with the motherboard, yeah.
    5. You can't always add new parts to old parts. Some are just plain slow. Some hard drives get junk put on them, then you're screwed.
    6. Processor = The "Brain" of the Computer. Hardware is like, all the pieces in the case. Software are the programs that go on your computer.
    7. Graphics card shows your graphics...you can use a bad one for simple things like Runescape, Word, Internet, and really good ones, which people pay a lot of money for, to run actual games, like Counter-Strike. It's hardware.
    8. CPU = Speed
    RAM = Laggyness of Computer
    They both contribute to your computer's overall speed.

    @IEatJ00erBaybees - thanks for clarifying even more !

    @mikev, -=uber*1337=- : I kind of just wanted to know some basic things about computers. Here are some of my computer specs though:

    - Laptop (acer).
    Intel Celeron M Processor 430, 1.73 GHz, 533 Mhz (what`s this GHz, MHz stuff ?), Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950, 512 mb RAM, Windows Vista Basic

    Do you guys think this could even be used to auto with.... ?

    - Laptop(ASUS) Is ASUS or acer better?
    Intel Pentium M processor, 1.73 GHz, 794 MHz, 512 MB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce Go 6200, Windows xp

    This computer is older than first one by three years but is STILL much faster. What's up with that?!

    - Desktop : I officially broke it yesterday.. ;{
    I don't know how to fix it.. I took out the ram then put it back put the case back on.. but, now when try to turn it on the monitors just all black, and the light on the monitor keeps blinking..

    It was fairly old though, Intel Celeron and 256 ram I think.

    - Laptop(ASUS) [Sisters computer... ]
    Intel Core 2 Duo T2060, 1.60 Ghz, 895 mb RAM, ATI Radeon 1100, Windows Vista Basic.

    How come the stickers that show my specs on my laptop are different than the ones I get from rt-click My Computer? The System Information is the accurate one right..? :{

    Also I`d like your opinions, are Desktops or Laptops better to get if you want your computer to be super fast, and hold a lot of space for you..

    I basically want a computer that is extremely fast and allows me to have 6 tabs on Mozilla, AIM, MSN, Photoshop ect without freezing up or lagging on me... I always do that and I end up doing all this waiting and ctrl/alt/delete stuff and it's getting on my nerves.

    Btw, does moving your programs to D drive (I always use C drive) speed up your computer?

    Thanks for being patient with me ! (:

    Yes, you should have no problem whatsoever macroing with that.

    - Laptop(ASUS) Is ASUS or acer better?
    Intel Pentium M processor, 1.73 GHz, 794 MHz, 512 MB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce Go 6200, Windows xp

    You should have no problem macroing with this one either.

    If you are talking about the two laptops, then Windows Vista is much more intensive on your processor and RAM, leaving less power available to run other programs.

    - Desktop : I officially broke it yesterday.. ;{
    I don't know how to fix it.. I took out the ram then put it back put the case back on.. but, now when try to turn it on the monitors just all black, and the light on the monitor keeps blinking..

    Sounds like a graphics card problem

    It was fairly old though, Intel Celeron and 256 ram I think.

    - Laptop(ASUS) [Sisters computer... ]
    Intel Core 2 Duo T2060, 1.60 Ghz, 895 mb RAM, ATI Radeon 1100, Windows Vista Basic.

    I feel bad 4 u man. Your sister is whoopin you.

    How come the stickers that show my specs on my laptop are different than the ones I get from rt-click My Computer? The System Information is the accurate one right..? :{

    Your computer may have been modidified since you bought it. That would explain the difference. Yes, I would go by the Sys Info.

    Also I`d like your opinions, are Desktops or Laptops better to get if you want your computer to be super fast, and hold a lot of space for you..

    Both desktops and laptops can be built to be leet. BUT..., building a desktop and a laptop to the same specs, the desktop will be far less expensive.

    I would get an buttload of RAM for your wants. I had a customer with the same wants and I just let him pay for more RAM, installed it, and he was happier than ever.

    Btw, does moving your programs to D drive (I always use C drive) speed up your computer?

    That depends on what D drive is. If you have a compaq/HP, I know they put a recovery partition on your main hard drive. There are many variables that speed would rely on. I say get more RAM(just a suggestion).

    Thanks for being patient with me ! (:[/QUOTE]
