    Default Laptop to buy?

Looked around the internet, but that didn't really help, because there were just too many option to decide from! Would be really great to see some personal experiences - maybe? What do you use?
My Dell is almost 4 years old now and I also got a leant MacBook from work so I'm considering buying a new one, but not sure what to buy.

    Things I look for:
    1.Quietness - I HATE noisy laptops.
2.Cooling - Needs to be 100% cool and no overheating problems.
    3.Stability

Overheating is a really big issue for me - I don't care if it's not the fastest thing out there as long as it's quiet and cool at the same time.

I don't care about the OS.

Also, getting a Mac would come at a 6-14% discount for me because of my work so that's also a thing to consider.

I always use laptop coolers and treat the equipment with care, but that VVROOOMMM hot-to-the-touch feel is just a pain in the backside and it can get really distracting while working..

Honestly, I wouldn't want to spend more than 5 months of working salary on a new laptop (1000$ in my case).

Programming is like trying keep a wall of shifting sand up, you fix one thing but somewhere else starts crumbling

Very nice thanks, but it mainly talks about performance whereas I'm more interested in durability, stability and any sort of overheating problems that might occur.
I'm not so much interested in an extreme gaming laptop, but something that will run quietly. Based on my personal experience Macs never seem to overheat and are very quiet, but I was wondering if other laptops are like this, too? (Been living in Dell Hell for 10 years now..)

I say for quiteness, an Asus ultrabook or macbook pro would do. I don't here noise from mines. A laptop on the other hand, will make noise depending on what your doing on it.

Of course if it's intense gaming, the fan and CPU is going to work extra hard to keep it cool.

i7 3770k is pretty good. Anything first gen will overheat instantly (from experience).

If you can wait, just wait on the Haswell 2nd Gen to come out in about a bit over a year. I don't see anyone buying a new macbook before 2013 as Apple always pulls this first quarter BS by releasing their crap and then during the year, something better. A lot of companies do this as well. I'd say aim for boxing day as things will be a ton cheaper but I'd prob wait for Haswell if you can live without a laptop for about a year or until March for the first gen.

    What screensize do you prefer?
    Ultrabooks usually have 13-14" screens.

Samsung Series 9 15-inch is interesting, it's has a bigger 15" screen but weighs less than 1,6 kg (~3,5 pounds). It is around 1,3cm thin, extremely thin I'd say. Still very easy to take with you but once you are working you have a nicer, bigger screen with a 1600x900 resolution. Pretty much all ultrabooks are extremely silent aswell.

You might want to look into the Lenovo Ideapad Yoga & Asus Taichi. Very interesting devices.

I personally have an Asus N56VZ laptop which boasts more power i7 3610qm which is a 2,3 ghz quadcore + turbo boost & hyperthreading, a 2 gb nvidia 650m graphics card and 8gb ram. Also put a 256gb SSD in it myself in total it was 1100€ so it is something you might want to consider. It is a lot bulkier and heavier though.

Looking back at my choice I do not regret it but those devices above are very interesting, but also more expensive with less than half of the power my laptop has. In the future I will be using it as my main "computer" aswell when I'm living on my own, currently using a normal PC but it will stay at my parents house :P

Anyways I typed more than expected.
You could also go for a cheaper ultrabook such as the Lenovo IdeaPad U410: http://goo.gl/SYvi4

13" would be fine. Preferably nothing too big or too small to look at.

Thanks again for all the helpful posts! I will probably wait it out a bit and get myself a nice Mac based on what you said or perhaps one of the other models that were mentioned...We'll see.

This was really helpful - appreciate it that you took your time to help me out on this one!

I have a Samsung 13" ultrabook but AMD processer...silent but it does get pretty hot. My personal opinion is, is that you give up too much power in ultrabooks (for the same price as a non-ultrabook)

My advice is to get a netbook. They're smaller, usually don't overheat even on beds or couches, and are definitely quieter than any notebook I've used. Usually good deals on Kijiji because most people don't like the keyboards, but once you get used to it, there is not difference.

Ifyou want raw power then no laptop matches your needs. However, if you dont require much power, consider an ultrabook with at an i3U/i5U/i7U processor. The U is just the ultrabook version of processor (lower power consumption, clock speed).

So I ended up getting the R500V Asus Series! Very nice laptop and I'm happy with my choice except for the Win8 that comes with it. Other than that, the framework (partially metal) is good for cooling + it comes with some nice specs.
Anyways, thanks for all the help I didn't expect so many people to comment !
