    Default WiFi Hotspot from WiFi

So, here's an idea I had but I'm not sure if it would work. Basically I want to use my phone as a WiFi hotspot but through WiFi instead of a data plan.

I made this diagram to help explain. The diagram on the top is how it normally works to use your phone as a hotspot, and the bottom one is how I hope it could work:

So does anyone think this is possible. The host phone is my android with 2.2.1.

    Thanks

Phones don't host WiFi signals only data signals

I'm thought they hosted WiFi because when you connect to a host phone's access point you connect like when connecting to a hotspot and not a cell tower.

Yeah, not from your phone, I can do it from my laptop.
An alternative would to have a router to sort of strengthen the signal.

What can you do from your laptop? A router needs to be plugged in to work though.

So the laptop can broadcast WiFi? Interesting...

So I guess I'd just need an app to broadcast the signal it is receiving over WiFi instead of the signal it is receiving from the cell towers...

Hmm looks like the reason a laptop can do it is because the wifi card on a laptop is designed to broadcast in two directions at once, and the wifi card in a cellphone is only designed to broadcast in one direction at a time...

I can do it on my iPhone, and it works, but it's slower because you're going through two devices.

They(iPhone 4 and my Motorola Defy) both have the same WiFi setup, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g, so maybe mine could too with the right software. It also appears that I could do it though bluetooth or usb cable with the right software...

Both my iPhone and blackberry could do this. Unfortunately I'm not sure about an Android.

You just need the right app, which I can do since it's jailbroken.

Which app? I know iPhone apps != Android apps, but if I read through a description it will help me when googling an android version as it is hard for me to describe what I want it to do, and thus hard to google

best bet is to use a wireless repeater/amp/extender or whatever you want to call it

you can also (if you have extra) get two wireless routers, take one to receive the signal, send it out ethernet.. plug into other, have other send out the signal (easy to do that)

your battery won't last for shit if you do either one you listed

same deal would work for laptops, or anything
a laptop you can just get another usb wifi adapter
The only true authority stems from knowledge, not from position.

Thanks for the advice guys. I wanted to use my phone instead of an extender just because I already have a phone and extenders are ~$100 iirc. Although I had forgot to account for the battery drain when using a phone .

I really like grats' idea with the two routers, I should try that because I do have a spare one and can probably pick up another fairly cheaply. I'll google how to do that unless I need any help, then I'll come here.

    Thanks for the help guys!
