It will take up as much RAM as you have allocated it for the virtual machine.
Just remember, you can only use as much CPU cores as your processor can handle, Running VM's will not increase the power of your PC.

I have a 'how to setup' virtualbox tutorial somewhere, it's only useful if smart isn't usable anymore.. like jagex will probably break when their html5 version comes out.. no idea if smart will work after that but if anyone can get it to work again it'd be benland before any other bots

HTML5 will be a big change for Jagex\RuneScape.
Benland is very smart when it comes to solving things like this.
Expect RiD\PB ect to be down for awhile when\if Jagex release HTML5
At the end of the day, we can also switch to 'Select Client' until Benland\Dev team get a solution up and running

To be honest, I am not sure how it would break, maybe @grats might be able to answer your question.
Java is a strong tool, the majority of the RuneScape client is written in java.
As to how RiD is so accurate, you might be better off posting on their forum as they are more likely to know the answer then people here. It's also harder for people to 'learn' how RiD works because its all closed source.
Rid isn't really 'that accurate'.
I've used it for the past few weeks a bit and it's alright, but I've seen better Simba scripts for everything it does.
It'll break because (from my understanding on what they're doing.. though they are pretty secret about it) they're changing the entire client from java.. where it loads your java applet etc when you go on runescape, to all html5 and javascript for clientside (javascript and java have absolutely nothing to do with each other fyi) this means, that instead of anything/every bot capturing the java applet (not that hard) you'd have to capture the html5/javascript which basically means in SMART's case you would have to rebuild an entire browser inside of the tiny smart box and capture your mouse or whatever it's called when it is in the smart box
that being said, I'm sure benland could do it.. especially with firefox being all open source and all, it should make it much easier than from scratch, building a browser is like building an operating system so I'm told

Other sites, including here too, have great minds for RS updates; simply pointing out that other sites may or may not ''suffer'' after the transition.
OT: Yes Virtual Box takes up RAM; as previously stated, only as much as you allocate. Virtual Box is quite nice for testing operating systems and running programs somewhat sandboxed :]
