Need an OS! Help Greatly Appreciated!

    Hey all,
I have a VM, and I need an OS. It just has to have a couple requirements..

-Doesn't use too much memory. So it shouldn't be anything memory-intensive, like Vista.
-Be able to run SCAR and Runescape, obviously.

Doesn't have to be Windows 95 or 98, but it can be.

    Thanks a bunch,
    IEJB!

I suggest you try out TinyXP it can be installed with as little as 2GB of hard drive space and it uses extremely little RAM. If I recall correctly it's supposed to be able to run with only 40MB of RAM. Here is a torrent for what I'm guessing is the latest release of it judging from it's age and my not having heard of this particular edition of it before. http://www.isohunt.com/download/18720313/tinyxp

There's also a guide available for it so you can read through that if you want as well. Here's the torrent for the guide http://www.isohunt.com/download/16045252/tinyxp

Torrents are a b* to me.. =\ I'll try it out, but it usually goes about 1 KB per second or something like that..I'm dling now. Down speed is about 5-10 KB/S

    http://www.freeos.com/download.php

How about any of those? Any of those support SCAR and run on low RAM.

I'm downloading it as well now that I found out I've been using a way out of date version of TinyXP. I'm getting around 150KB/s so things are moving along pretty quickly for me. Here's the contents of the read me file from it just so anybody else looking at this thread knows its features.

Basically, this is Windows XP Pro SP2, with useless contents removed, for performance's sake.
It runs fast, installs with no trouble, is updatable (passing WGA), and contains the following useful applications:

Codec Pack All in 1 v6.0.3.0
    Cool Edit Pro v2.1
    Daemon Tools v4.08
    Directory Printer v5.1
    DVD Ripper Platinum v4.0.72
    DVD X Player Pro v4.1
    DVD-Cloner IV v4.10
    Free Download Manager v2.1
    Nero v7.7.5.1
    NOD32 v2.70.32
    Office Pro 2003
    PC Auto Shutdown v3.4
    Premiere Elements v2.0
    Reader v8.0
    Rename v1.56.0
    SnagIt v8.2.2
    Spy Sweeper v5.3.2
    UltraISO v8.6.1
    Unlocker v1.8.5
    uTorrent v1.6.1
    WinRAR v3.62

Some of these applications got their useless parts cutted off (in order to fit a 700 MBs CD), but they are still fully functioning. Taking these applications as a whole, they will fit your most-common needs.

To setup, simply burn the ISO Disc Image at a slow speed, backup the hard-drive files you want to keep on a CD- or DVD-ROM, restart the PC, boot from the CD, then format the partition using the NTFS file system. No serial number is required.

The "Save System RAM Memory" file included in the eXPerience folder will make it possible for you to have Windows TinyXP running on just four services, eleven processes and using only 34.7Mb RAM. Each process is chosen to be running or not, simply by answering a series of user-friendly questions.

    I'm trying ReactOS right now..

Do I have to use a CD-RW? Can I use a CD-R? Is there a way I can load the ISO right onto the VMWare Server?

Ok, I basically said SCREW IT! And now I'm just doing TinyXP..although I need steps in English on how to install it -.-

    Linux?

There's something called "Knoppix" that can run Linux right from a CD. Lemme find you a link...

Windows isn't the only OS out there

Yup just download Daemon tools. You can mount any ISO image using a virtual cdrom drive that your computer will see just as if it were a real cd inside of a real cdrom drive. It's pretty cool and it sure as hell beats burning things to discs just to run them on your computer. Here is the link for it http://tinyurl.com/7nx83

Windows isn't the only OS out there
While that is true you fail to take into account that Windows is the only OS that SCAR works on currently. I recall reading another thread a day or two ago where someone had asked if SCAR works on Linux and the answer was no for the moment. There's some things that WINE doesn't work so hot with which is why I'm still using windows. The bastards will never get me to use Vista ever though.

Depending on what vm software you're using, you might be able to 'virtually' insert an iso into your vm's cd drive

    Now walk it out?

Loaded the ISO..it works great! But it's realllllllly slow at 156 MB RAM on the VM. (Leaving 844MB on my computer). VMWare Tools won't install either =\

What's the Guest OS? Is it the VMWare Operating System or the OS that VMWare is running on? (Like what I'm browsing on right now)

I'm trying TinyXP right now. It installed fine, but VMTools wouldn't install. I found a solution for that online, though.

I unmounted the TinyXP ISO from the CD drive and then browsed to Program Files/VMWare/ directory on my comp and mounted the Windows.iso image. This image is the VMTools. Then I went back to the TinyXP VM and installed it from the virtual CD drive. It installed fine!

I'm going to continue testing it to see if it's as good or better than Win98 SE and report back.

Best thing is Microsofts VM program
Its so much simpler/better than VMware!
And you can see mouse on it
(you can on VMware, but you cant install Vmware Tools)

I use TinyXP along with Microsfot Virtual PC

You can look arround and torrent it.

When I tried VirtualPC before it was horribly laggy. But I think I'll try it out again with TinyXP.

Win98 on VMWare without WMTools is extremely slow, due to the very poor video acceleration available. Adding VMTools to Win98 makes things much, much better, since it upgrades the drivers. However, when I first installed TinyXP, it seemed to run very nicely, even without VMTools installed (better drivers, I'm sure). So maybe the TinyXP drivers are good enough to allow VirtualPC to run without lag.

I think I'll test that next, after I get done looking at TinyXP + VMTools on VMWare.

I was looking at that before I knew about VMWare, and it looked pretty darn good. I'll give it a go

EDIT: Wow. Totally recommended!!! Doesn't lag at all! Only one thing here, The VM is on a black screen. It just won't move away from that. TinyXP Setup and everything too! =\

Notice on how the pic of the hard drive in the lower left hand corner, it's orangy-red.

Why is that? I made a virtual disk..and loaded it in, installed TinyXP, Partioned the HD with NFTS or w/e and it's just doing what's above =\

EDIT: Working now! Just had to wait it out...

I'm pretty unimpressed with VMWare + VmTools + TinyXP. It lags really, really bad for me.

Maybe it would be better WITHOUT VMTools. Dunno. I'll probably check that out too.

Edit, Preferences, Input, remove the checkbox from Hide cursor on ungrab.
BTW, the newest version of VMWare Workstation isn't emulation, but paravirtualization from within the OS kernel, greatly increasing peformance.
I made a new script, check it out!.

We ARENT allowed to post links to torrent sites here!(Pretty Sure)
In answer to that I give you a quote from the SRL Rules and Regulations
You will be permanently banned for the following offences:

    * Script Posting on other forums. Do not post other peoples SRL Scripts on any forum unless given permission from the Original Author.
    * Offensive Material: Posting or linking to pornography or any other unethical material.
    * Spam Advertisements. Autospammer are banned on the spot. We have a very adequate report mechanism.
    * Warez: Posting or linking to Warez / Cracks / Serials or any other illegal copyrighted material.
    * Keylogging / Password Cracking: Any topic related to keylogging / password cracking, helping others creating / using / discussing / distributing password cracks or keyloggers is strictly prohibited.
    * Posting infected files: viruses, trojans and generally any other malicious pieces of software / hyperlinks are not allowed.
    * Impersonating: Pretending to be a Developer/Moderator/Admin.
It never says anything about posting links to torrents providing that the torrent does not contain any keyloggers or viruses and that it is not illegal copyrighted material. Really you aren't getting Windows XP when you buy it from a store. You are merely buying a license to use Windows XP and a disc that contains the software that you are now licensed to use on a single computer. Providing you have a license to use Windows XP you're perfectly within your legal rights to download and use TinyXP. The legality of this particular torrent is subjective so it really depends on whether the people that download it have the right to use it or not. As far as I can tell that would make my posting it here perfectly acceptable as far as the rules go. If an Admin tells me otherwise then I'll happily remove it.

Does any know the diff between beast edition of tinyxp and normal tiny xp?
The difference is that the beast edition of tinyxp has no networking support and is even more stripped down than tinyxp normally is. It's a streamlined OS for gaming and browsing the internet. If it works for you then go for it however I would advise that you get the latest version of tinyxp which is rev6 or tinyxp appz. They're really the same thing but as you may have guessed from the name tinyxp appz includes some appz that supposedly cover all of what you need for day to day use. If you want you could always just download Last Session.ini from tinyxp and use that with Nlite to make your own tinyxp. You could even just download Nlite and start your own tinyxp from scratch with all of your own settings. It's what I had done before I came across tinyxp.

newest version of VMWare Workstation isn't emulation, but paravirtualization from within the OS kernel, greatly increasing peformance
Cool I might actually try out the ol' VMWare once again now that you tell me this. VirtualBox will still have a place on my system though.
